The fourth meeting of the Intersessional Process (IP4) considering the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) and sound management of chemicals and waste beyond 2020 is scheduled for August 29th to September 2nd 2022, in Bucharest, Romania.

Though IP4 was postponed for more than two years due to the worldwide situation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, discussions in four Virtual Working Groups (VWGs) helped keep the momentum up and progress the work on the following technical issues:

(i) Targets, indicators, and milestones;
(ii) Governance and mechanisms to support implementation;
(iii) Issues of concern;
(iv) Financial considerations.

The reports of the outcomes of the Virtual Working Groups are available on the SAICM website and demonstrate progress achieved on the topics mentioned above.

Our new report “Results and analysis of SAICM VWGs” summarizes the results of the SAICM Virtual Working Groups, and is available here: https://hej-support.org/new-report-summarizes-results-of-saicm-virtual-working-groups/

To inform the NGO community, as well as country delegates, about SAICM developments, Health and Environment Justice Support (HEJSupport), the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC), groundWork South Africa (gW), and the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) are organizing a webinar on the 24th of June at 2p.m. CET on the virtual working group outputs. Positions developed jointly in these matters by “A group of NGOs” will also be discussed.

This webinar is linked to projects funded by the German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection (BMUV) and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).
