On the eve of the high-level UN General Assembly, Climate Week and the final round of global Plastic Treaty negotiations, HEJSupport joined leading Canadian civil society organizations calling on Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada, to demonstrate leadership and commitments to protect the world from plastic pollution.
NGOs urge the Minister to secure an internationally binding plastics treaty that includes measures that will meaningfully reduce plastic production levels.
Alongside control measures for products and hazardous chemicals, the global plastics treaty must incorporate supply-side strategies aimed at reducing virgin plastic production. This should prioritize setting a global target for plastic production reduction, accompanied by mandatory national-level cuts. Such actions are necessary due to the harmful effects and pollution caused by plastic production, not only at the point of origin but throughout the entire lifecycle of plastics.
