Blog

UNEP published a new study on illegal trade in chemicals and pesticides. HEJSupport Co-Director Olga Speranskaya was one of the lead authors.

The report provides a thorough review of the status of illegal trade in chemicals, regulatory frameworks in trade of chemicals, with a particular focus on mercury and pesticides. The study discusses the knowledge gaps and enforcement challenges in the illegal trade in chemicals. It reveals some weaknesses in the existing regulatory systems and some of the difficulties inenforcement. The findings of this report inform a set of considerations for policy makers and competent authorities at the national, regional and international levels of engagement, and for communities and users of these chemicals and related products.

The report includes information from the ground, contributed by our NGO colleagues from MAMA 86 (Ukraine), BaliFokus (Indonesia), Toxisphera (Brazil), EcoForum (Kazakhstan) and Centre for Environmental Justice and Development (Kenya).
