During its fourth session, the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, decided to create two ad hoc intersessional open-ended expert groups to provide technical input and support the Committee’s work. Committee members nominated their national experts to join the groups, starting with three virtual meetings before the in-person meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, scheduled for August 24–28, 2024.
The first expert group aims to develop options for establishing a financial mechanism for implementing the future instrument. In contrast, the second group should identify and analyze criteria and non-criteria-based approaches regarding “plastic products and chemicals of concern in plastic products, and product design focusing on recyclability and reusability of plastic products, considering their uses and applications“.
Prior to the Intersessional meeting, Canada’s INC Team asked some organisations to provide input on important questions that would facilitate Canada’s participation in the Intersessional work on plastic. To support Canada’s Team, HEJSupport, SSNC and groundWork SA prepared detailed answers to the questions, prioritizing the work of the second expert group on chemicals in plastic products.
The paper containing the input on the questions is available below.
