On April 4, 2024, the first chamber of the French Parliament unanimously voted for a law proposal initiated by Green MP Nicolas Thierry. The proposal includes a ban on all PFAS chemicals in clothing for the general public, cosmetics, and ski waxes by 2026 and for all textiles by 2030.
The proposal also sets a fee for facilities emitting PFAS over 100 grammes per year and requires monitoring of PFAS in drinking water.
Cookware was included in the initial proposal but has been dropped from the scope following strong opposition from cookware producer Tefal.
The law proposal will now be discussed by the second chamber, the Senate.
For now, Denmark is the only EU member state to have banned PFAS in food packaging.
