The European People’s Party has shown more ambition on pollution than on other green issues

The European People’s Party (EPP) has shown more ambition on pollution than on other green issues in the European Parliament, albeit at a low level. NGOs reviewed 30 files, 10 related to pollution, including key topics like chemical classification, water quality, and industrial emissions.

Environmental groups rated EPP at 30% for fighting pollution, compared to 19% for nature protection and 25% for climate action. The Socialists & Democrats (S&D) scored 74% on pollution, 71% on nature, and 67% on climate. The Greens, The Left, and S&D were the most ambitious on pollution, while Renew was middle-ranked, and EPP, ECR, and ID were low-ranked.

National delegations within political groups varied:

  • EPP: Netherlands, Belgium, and Finland were more ambitious, while Bulgaria and Italy were least ambitious.
  • S&D: Bulgarian and Romanian delegations ranked lowest.
  • Renew: Parties from Poland, Ireland, and the Netherlands were more ambitious.
  • ECR: Fratelli d’Italia scored zero, while Dutch politicians scored highest.
  • ID: Overall scores were low, with French Rassemblement National and German AfD close to zero.
