
The European People’s Party (EPP) has shown more ambition on pollution than on other green issues in the European Parliament, albeit at a low level. NGOs reviewed 30 files, 10 related to pollution, including key topics like chemical classification, water quality, and industrial emissions.
Environmental groups rated EPP at 30% for fighting pollution, compared to 19% for nature protection and 25% for climate action. The Socialists & Democrats (S&D) scored 74% on pollution, 71% on nature, and 67% on climate. The Greens, The Left, and S&D were the most ambitious on pollution, while Renew was middle-ranked, and EPP, ECR, and ID were low-ranked.
National delegations within political groups varied:
- EPP: Netherlands, Belgium, and Finland were more ambitious, while Bulgaria and Italy were least ambitious.
- S&D: Bulgarian and Romanian delegations ranked lowest.
- Renew: Parties from Poland, Ireland, and the Netherlands were more ambitious.
- ECR: Fratelli d’Italia scored zero, while Dutch politicians scored highest.
- ID: Overall scores were low, with French Rassemblement National and German AfD close to zero.
Faustine Bas-Defossez, Director for nature, health, and environment at the EEB, emphasized the importance of the upcoming EU elections for prioritizing health and a toxic-free future.
