The EEB Chemical Working Group Newsletter of October 2024
HEJSupport’s work on the Global Plastics Treaty and a new project on plastic waste in Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia is featured in the EEB Chemical Working Group Newsletter published in October 2024.
This issue explores vital topics in EU policy and chemical regulations, including on PFAS. Significant policy changes following the EU elections, the progress in chemical regulations, and a recent UN report on Gender and Toxics are discussed.
The latest efforts by HEJ-Support to enhance transparency regarding chemicals in plastics are included in the Global update.
Since 2019, HEJSupport, SSNC, and GroundWork have collaborated on promoting transparency, traceability, and labelling of chemicals in materials and products, which is essential to phasing out toxic substances and achieving a circular economy free of harmful chemicals. Efforts to integrate transparency and traceability into the Plastic Treaty negotiations began in the fall of 2021 and continued leading up to the Intergovernmental Negotiation Committees (INCs). Advocacy efforts have focused on the African, EU, Latin American, and Asia-Pacific regions, emphasizing the need for strong treaty provisions on transparency and traceability to fulfill the treaty’s objectives and operational commitments.
In May 2024, HEJSupport also started a partnership project with NGOs from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan-Uzbekistan, and Ukraine, which is a testament to its collective commitment to addressing the plastic crisis in five countries of Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA). The Plastic Waste Partnership under the Basel Convention supported the project to mobilize civil society, governments, and other stakeholders in the targeted countries to minimize plastic waste generation, promote environmentally sound plastic management, and contribute to sustainable plastic-free alternatives.
