The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is in effect

The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) officially took effect on July 18, 2024.

This development is a major victory for environmental sustainability, showcasing the continued push for more comprehensive and effective ecodesign regulations. Building on the success of the Ecodesign Directive, its predecessor, the ESPR will expand ambitious ecodesign standards to a broader range of products. This expansion aims to phase out the most polluting items from the market and motivate manufacturers to prioritize environmental considerations.

The ESPR establishes a detailed framework that includes several elements; some will need further legislative measures, while others will begin immediately following its enactment. For example, in 24 months, the initial ban on destroying unsold goods will apply to clothing and footwear, with specific product criteria to be determined through delegated acts. The success of the ESPR will largely depend on its effective implementation. It will be essential to prioritize product categories, implement cross-cutting measures, and create robust standards to avoid delays and address the most polluting products first. Active participation from stakeholders will be essential throughout the entire process.
