The OECD has released a new report examining the use of PFAS in hydraulic oils and lubricants across critical sectors like transport, defense, energy, and manufacturing. PFAS are valued for their unique performance under extreme conditions, particularly for corrosion inhibition in hydraulic systems.
However, the report finds limited progress in substituting PFAS due to significant technical and economic barriers. Without strong market or regulatory drivers, PFAS-based lubricants are expected to remain dominant.
The report calls for targeted policy actions to overcome these challenges and promote safer, sustainable alternatives.
