During a plenary debate in December 2024, MEPs from various political groups expressed concerns about the rising pollution of Europe’s drinking water, particularly due to PFAS contamination.
MEPs urged addressing pollution at its source and enforcing the polluter pays principle. They called for a ban on PFAS in both consumer and industrial applications and highlighted the importance of tackling PFAS pesticides because of their impact on drinking water.
Executive Vice-President Fitto announced that the European Commission has initiated a study to assess the feasibility of removing PFAS from drinking water. Initial health-based results are expected in 2026.
The Commission also plans to introduce a European water resilience strategy this term, and the European Parliament is preparing a related report led by MEP Thomas Bajada (Malta, S&D).
