(26 June 2026) An Italian court convicted, in a first-instance judgement, 11 former chemical executives to prison terms for having caused widespread PFAS pollution that affected thousands of people in the Veneto region. For decades, the PFAS manufacturing plant Miteni discharged chemical waste into the waterways, contaminating the drinking water and soil over a vast area around the facility. Hundreds of plaintiffs joined the trial, including more than 200 residents and a group of local mothers, Mamme no PFAS, who joined forces after discovering PFAS in their blood and in that of their children. The sentence also includes financial compensation: 50,000 euros for each citizen involved in the suit, 6.5 million euros to the Veneto region, and 58 million euros to the Italian Ministry of Environment.
