ECHA Initiates Review to Classify ‘Forever Chemical’ TFA as Reprotoxic 1B

ECHA will commence its evaluation of the German proposal to classify trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and its inorganic salts as reprotoxic 1B, indicating presumed toxicity to human reproduction, as well as persistent, mobile, and toxic (PMT), and very persistent and very mobile (vPvM).
TFA primarily arises as the ultimate degradation product of PFAS pesticides and gaseous PFAS, significantly contributing to water pollution levels that concern water management authorities. If classified as reprotoxic 1B, it could result in the prohibition of PFAS pesticides under Toxic-Free for EU No 61.
ECHA’s Risk Assessment Committee is mandated to deliver its opinion within 18 months, after which the Commission will make the final decision. This process typically extends to nearly 2 years on average.
Currently, TFA is classified as harmful if inhaled, skin corrosive 1A, and chronically toxic for aquatic life.
