Chemical safety is an EU-responsibility

Chemical safety is an EU-responsibility

The revision of #REACH is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to strengthen Europe’s protection against hazardous chemicals. But this opportunity must not be squandered.

A joint civil society statement makes this clear: the revised REACH framework must deliver tangible improvements in chemical safety, transparency, and prevention—ensuring that pollution crises, such as #PFAS contamination, are never repeated.

REACH is Europe’s cornerstone chemicals legislation. Yet harmful substances can remain in use for years while evidence of harm accumulates. The revision must address these structural weaknesses, ensure faster action on hazardous chemicals, provide better protection from harmful mixtures, and strengthen accountability across supply chains.

This is about more than regulatory reform. It is about protecting human health, preventing pollution at its source, and restoring public trust in chemical safety governance.

HEJSupport and more than 30 civil society organizations are calling for a strong, science-based, and prevention-focused REACH revision—one that prioritizes health, the environment, and future generations.
