Belgium EU Presidency agenda – chemicals files

(7 December 2023) The incoming Belgian Presidency wants to pursue “the sound implementation of the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability and foster discussions on some aspects, such as microplastics and PFAS”.

During the first half of 2024, the Flemish government will host a conference on handling PFAS pollution in Antwerp, which has been affected these last years by a serious PFAS pollution case.

On the legislative side, Belgium will work on the “One substance, one assessment” package and advance negotiations on the revisions of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive.

The “green and fair transition” is one of the six priorities of the Presidency’s programme to address the triple crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

During the upcoming institutional transition time, the Presidency sees itself as a driving force in supporting the development of the strategic agenda 2024-2029 of the European Council and wants to explore how the triple crisis can be addressed beyond 2024.

The Environment Council meetings will be chaired by the Environment Minister, Alain Maron, from the Brussels region.
