(24 January 2024) The Belgisch EU Presidency “will pursue the successful implementation of the Chemicals strategy and will encourage discussion of certain aspects of the Chemicals strategy such as microplastics and PFAS,” said Alain Maron, the chair of the Environment Council, in an exchange with the Environment Committee in the European Parliament.
He highlighted that “the Presidency will seize any opportunity to prevent and deal with [the PFAS pollution], wherever there are opportunities to do so in the legislation”.
Regarding the legislative files still waiting to be closed, Belgium intends to reach interinstitutional agreements on the revisions of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), the Wastewater Treatment Directive, and the Mercury Regulation and to advance negotiations on the list of priority substances in water.
Alain Maron distanced himself from Belgian Prime Minister’s De Croo statement for a pause on green files, saying that “there is no question of pressing pause”.
